The Sunday Bird Walk went to the Shelly Road side of the Englishman River Estuary in Parksville. Among the highlights were the sightings of a Heermann's Gull, a Merlin, Sanderlings, Black-bellied Plovers, Common Yellowthroat and a Yellow Warbler.
Twenty-six birders, including birders from Australia, Denmark, New
Brunswick, Calgary and Vancouver Island found the following fifty-one species of birds:
Common Loon, Pelagic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Canada Goose, American Wigeon, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Surf Scoter, Common Merganser, Turkey Vultures, Merlin, Red-tailed Hawk, Least Sandpipers, Western Sandpipers, Black-bellied Plovers, Sanderlings, Killdeer, Black Turnstone, Mew Gull, Bonaparte's Gull, Glaucous-winged Gull, California Gull, Ring-billed Gull, Heermann's Gull, Belted Kingfisher, Northern Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Northwestern Crow, Common Raven, Steller's Jay, Orange-crowned Warbler,Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Bewick's Wren, Winter Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Swainson's Thrush, American Robin, European Starling, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, House Finch, Pine Siskin, Purple Finch and American Goldfinch.
An American Golden-plover and a Pacific Golden-plover, a Semipalmated Plover and Least and Western Plovers were seen on the mud flats on the Englishman River Estuary, Plummer Road side in Parksville.
Friday September 05:
"Rare Bird Alert--Red Knot"
A Red Knot was seen off the gravel bar in front of the Pebble Beach Townhouses off Johnstone Road at Columbia Beach.
Thursday September 04:
A Surf Bird, a Parasitic Jaeger and a Red Knot were seen at Columbia Beach.
A Green Heron was seen at Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo.
Wednesday September 03:
Over 115 Black Turnstones and over fifty Bonaparte's Gulls were seen on the beach off Yambury Road in Qualicum Beach.
Tuesday September 02:
Four Sandhill Cranes, one Vaux's Swift and three Black Swift were seen over the 100 block of Meridian Way in Parksville.
Canada Geese, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, California Quail, Great Blue Heron, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Merlin, Semipalmated Plover, Killdeer, Western Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Mew Gulls, Bonaparte's Gull, Northern Flicker, Western Wood-Pewee, Willow Flycatcher, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Northwestern Crow, Common Raven, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Bushtit, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Cedar Waxwing, Orange-crowned Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Spotted Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Brewer's Blackbird, Purple Finch, House Finch and American Goldfinch were seen at the Englishman River Estuary, Plummer Road side.
Monday September 01:
Two Rufous Hummingbirds were seen along Pintail Drive in Qualicum Beach.

A Ruddy Turnstone and a Parasitic Jaeger were seen at Columbia Beach.
Saturday August 30:
An immature Northern Goshawk was spotted above the Denman Island ferry exit off Highway 19.
